A Tale of Two Chinatowns

We were out shopping for seafood in Oakland's Chinatown today and it reminded me of the farce that is DC's so-called Chinatown, filled with Starbucks, The Gap, Citibank, Hooters, and other assorted non-Chinese establishments that bear Chinese character names. In all fairness there are a few Chinese restaurants in DC's Chinatown but they are few and far between and there are certainly no good markets.

DC's Chinatown was the victim of urban renewal. When the Verizon Center (nee MCI Arena) was built in Chinatown in '97 the dye was cast. It's a joke, it's sad and it's definitely not a Chinatown but with that said the area has contributed a lot to DC's growth, I just wish that DC had a real Chinatown...
DC's "Chinatown"

The real deal, Chinatown Oakland (not even SF)
