View From My Window: Tokyo, Japan

And I thought the view in Lima was bad. Oh well, I'm hardly ever in my room and it's always nice to be in Tokyo so the view is irrelevant.

Over the 14 years that I've been coming here Japan has undergone many changes but at the same time there are somethings that never change. With the sharp decline in the value of the dollar, it feels like the mid-90s all over again. The $5 cup of coffee has reared its head again as has sticker shock on many other common items. It's a nice city but expensive.

A few other things that have remained constant...
  • Elevator girls whose sole job is to press the up or down button for the elevator for you. A nice touch but a little odd.
  • Warm and friendly hospitality with a heavy dose of formality.
  • White gloved taxi drivers who often have a hard time finding your destination. Addresses in Tokyo can be a bit challenging to say the least.
  • Incredibly delicious food made with the freshest and finest ingredients to be had. Sushi lovers, the uni is phenomenal!
  • Melons that cost $200 or more which is one thing I'll never comprehend.
  • Extreme sensitivities to spreading germs. No complaints about that.
