I came across the Snail Mail by Email project a couple of weeks ago and decided to send my wife a letter. It arrived yesterday and she loved it. Unfortunately, the project has ended but it succeeded in reminding me how important handwritten letters are.
From Snail Mail by Email...
Snail Mail My Email is a month-long worldwide collaborative art project that ran from July 15 - August 15, 2011. The project allowed people to email a letter, which was then handwritten by volunteers — complete with customizable options like a doodle, flower petal or lipstick kiss if desired — and mailed to the recipient, completely free of charge.A good article on the project from the WSJ is here.
The result?
Thanks to enthusiastic participants and the insanely generous contribution from a global network of 234 dedicated volunteers, 10,457 handwritten letters were collectively sent out to over 50 countries around the world, spanning across all seven continents. This response made it clear that, despite the fast-paced world we live in, the value found in personalized handwritten letters is not lost.
