You know those small squishy (that's a technical term) yellow balls that occasionally litter the neighborhoods of DC and other cities. The ones that when stepped on smell like raw sewage. They look like this:
Well, as it turns out that "those things" are fruit from the Gingko tree and they contain a nut that is very popular in Asia which when cleaned and roasted are edible and as most things in Asia, good for you - think gingko biloba.
It also turns out that there's a fruit producing Gingko tree the next block over -- not so good for the neighbors but great for us. The day after Hurricane Sandy I went around the corner, picked up - or should I say foraged - several dozen gingko fruits off the ground, cleaned the stinky fruit off (with gloves on), and roasted them.
Dee-lish.

Too bad others don't know this. Maybe you can pass this on to the local TV media. It would be a good story.
But, would people be too, uh, lazy, to take advantage? hmmm....
