Wow: Making Our Wedding Rings

This was one of the most wonderful experiences I've ever had. On July 20th, my fiancée (now my wife) and I spent almost eight blissful hours physically making our wedding bands. Sounds crazy huh, especially for two people who had virtually no experience working with metal? That's exactly what we thought but after talking to Adam, the owner of sanfranciscoweddingring.com, he convinced us that at the end of our day with him, we'd have wedding rings that would be of a higher quality, far prettier, and cost less than rings we could buy from a jewelry store.

He was so right!

We had settled on a style of ring called mokume gane. Mokume gane (moku = wood, me = eye and gane = metal) is a traditional Japanese metal technique invented by a 17th century master metalsmith who used it for the adornment of samurai swords. In choosing mokume gane we had unknowingly settled on a style of ring that is one of the more challenging styles to make. Fortunately, Adam in addition to being funny, personable, and having an incredible eye for detail is a craftsman who possesses expert skills in making mokume gane rings.

This is how we did it...

Making our wedding rings was an experience we will treasure forever. It was made even more special because Adam is such a pleasure to work with. If you're getting married, I strongly recommend that think about making your own bands and contact Adam to help you do it...you won't regret it!
