We went wine tasting last weekend in Paso Robles, stopped by Hearst Castle, and drove partly up Route 1 passing the fire scorched hills of Big Sur on the way back.
My advice...skip the castle, keep on tasting wine and be sure to take a deep breath when you get behind a slow poke on coastal highway.
For the most part we passed on the big boys like Justin, Robert Hall, EOS, etc., and sampled several smaller wineries. Out of the eight or so that we visited the standouts were Adelaida, Zin Alley (extraordinarily fruity zen if you're into that kind of thing), and Fratella Perata. The duds not necessarily in any particular order were Chumeia, Hunt, Norman, Tablas Creek although their mouvedre is nice, and Peachy Canyon for the most part.
The countryside is beautiful and in many ways the landscape reminded us of Sonoma. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone looking to get away for a relaxing weekend and if you're interested in a nice house to rent I have a good suggestion.
