You can take a flight on the the first zeppelin to touch down on American soil in more than seven decades. The 246-foot airship is the longest in the in the country, and one of just three existing zeppelins in the world.
The ship, which is like a blimp but with a rigid frame, arrived Saturday at NASA's Moffett Field, home to three of the 12 remaining airship hangars in the United States. It will make its first commercial flight on Oct. 31.
The helium-filled zeppelin seats 12, has a range of 500 miles and tops out at 77 mph. The ship will initially fly solely out of Moffett Field, but will add Oakland International and Sonoma County Airports next month. Rides will start at $495 for a one-hour flight.
I took a hot air balloon flight many years ago and it wasn't the most exciting thing in the world so I think I'll take a pass on the BAB (Big Ass Balloon)...495 bucks can buy a lot of nice wine.
But in honor of the BAB I can't pass up an opportunity to post a song from one of my favorite bands from yesteryear, Led Zeppelin.
"When the Levee Breaks" is accompanied by a poignant slideshow of photos from Katrina and the aftermath in New Orleans. This must NEVER happen again.
P.S. Going into this I wasn't planning to have a weird mashup of a blimp, Led Zeppelin and Katrina. Funny how stuff happens
