Everyone's heard this song at some point but it wasn't until today, the birthday of it's singer Astrud Gilberto, that I learned the history of the song and Astrud.
Astrud first appeared on the music scene when she sang on the album Getz/Gilberto featuring João Gilberto, Stan Getz, and Antonio Carlos Jobim released in 1964. She had never performed professionally, and sang on the recordings at the suggestion of her (then) husband, João Gilberto.
The song, along with Astrud and Stan Getz, was subsequently featured in a very campy 60's film called "Get Yourself a College Girl". The video below is from the movie and wow does it look like it was an awful flick.
Happy Birthday Astrud...

This is nice, and well, yeah it is her birthday but check out Frank Sinatra's version on the album "Francis Albert Sinatra and Antonio Carlos Jobim" one of my favorites.
Coincidence? Diane Krall's album was released today. "The Boy from Ipanema" is on of the tunes on it.
Oops, DIANA is the first name not Diane
