The UN estimates that there are more than 110 million landmines in 64 countries. Between 2003 and 2005, there were almost 7000 landmine deaths and casualties a year worldwide. Some of the most contaminated places are Afghanistan, Angola, Burundi, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Cambodia, Chechnya, Colombia, Iraq, Nepal and Sri Lanka.
According to the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, over the past 10 years, The Mine Ban Treaty, an international agreement that bans antipersonnel landmines, has been signed by 156 countries. Thirty-nine countries have yet to sign the agreement, including the United States.
It costs between $3-$10 to purchase a landmine but $300-$1,000 to remove one. Numerous devices and concepts have been developed, including a landmine sniffer rat, with the objective making landmine identification easier and safer.
