Today marks International Peace Day which was unanimously adopted by the UN in 2001 after the persistent work of one man, Jeremy Gilley, to establish a fixed calendar day for ceasefires and non-violence.
To inaugurate the day, the "Peace Bell" (photo above) is rung at UN Headquarters. The Peace Bell was given to the United Nations in 1954 by Japan as a reminder of the human cost of war. The bell is cast from coins donated by people from 60 different countries and is inscribed with the phrase "Long live absolute world peace."
