Thanks to Hubble NASA has created a 3D image of the Orion Nebula. This small pic doesn't come close to doing it justice so click on the image to view a larger res.
A little background from Wiki...
The Orion Nebula is a diffuse nebula situated south of Orion's Belt. It is one of the brightest nebulae, and is visible to the naked eye in the night sky. It is located at a distance of 1,344 ± 20 light years and is the closest region of massive star formation to Earth. The nebula is estimated to be 24 light years across and is one of the most scrutinized and photographed objects in the night sky. In 1993, the Hubble Space Telescope first observed the Orion Nebula. Since then, the nebula has been a frequent target for HST studies. The images have been used to build a detailed model of the nebula in three dimensions. It gets better.
The image is from a 43-minute 3D IMAX movie about Hubble that opened a few days ago.
I can't wait to check it out.
