Finally!

The government has finally decided to get serious about a silent killer.

From WaPo...
The Food and Drug Administration is planning an unprecedented effort to gradually reduce the salt consumed each day by Americans, saying that less sodium in everything from soup to nuts would prevent thousands of deaths from hypertension and heart disease. The initiative, to be launched this year, would eventually lead to the first legal limits on the amount of salt allowed in food products.

Most salt eaten by Americans -- 77 percent -- comes from processed foods, making it difficult for consumers to limit salt to healthy levels, experts say. (For example, Starbucks Java Chip Frappuccino Light Blended Coffee has 350 milligrams of sodium—about 15 percent of our daily allowance.)

The crazy thing is that some people are opposed to this (you can probably guess the profile) based on the nutty belief that the government wants to regulate how much salt they eat. In reality this step would give people greater freedom to choose how much salt to consume rather than it being forced on them by product manufacturers.
