Remembering Challenger
There are few moments in life with such a profound impact that where you were and what you were doing when the news was delivered is forever seared into your memory. For me, 25 years ago yesterday was one of those moments.
After a morning college class I stopped by a friend's room and she immediately asked, "Did you hear what happened?"
With childhood desires to be an astronaut still lingering inside me I paid close attention to shuttle launches. I had no idea "what happened" but reflexively and jokingly (admittedly in a very morbid way) I responded, "What? Did the shuttle blow up?"
I was stunned when she replied, "Yes."
To this day, I still have a hard time watching video of the Challenger explosion.
May you continue to rest in peace Ellison Onizuka, Mike Smith, Christa McAuliffe, Dick Scobee, Greg Jarvis, Ron McNair and Judith Resnik.
A StoryCorp remembrance of Ron McNair by his brother Carl...
