After passing by Catania Bakery a zillion times over the years I discovered last week that it is open for retail sales Saturday mornings.
An early morning errand, a glance at Catania as I passed by, a quick u-turn and I finally discovered what was hiding behind those doors all these years and it's quite remarkable.
In continuous operation since 1934, this bakery which represents the last remnant of what used to be an Italian neighborhood isn't old school, it's ancient school. Somehow Catania has managed to stay in operation for over 75 years through up and downs in the economy and not so great changes to the neighborhood. Despite or more likely because of its age the bakery turns out a killer pain au chocolat, delicious italian bread, and mouth watering croissants, all served up by the proprietor, Nicole Tramonte.
If you happen to be in DC early on a Saturday morning, check it out. Walking through the front door is like walking into a tasty time machine. Catania is definitely one of DC's hidden gems.
