Skip, the Irony

No point in rehashing the Skip Gates debacle there's enough of that on the web but this is an irony saturated aspect of the story I just heard about.

From NPR...
The white police sergeant criticized by President Barack Obama for arresting black scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. in his Massachusetts home is a police academy expert on cultural diversity.

Cambridge Sgt. James Crowley has taught a class on diversity for five years at the Lowell Police Academy.

The course, called "Racial Profiling," teaches about different cultures that officers could encounter in their community "and how you don't want to single people out because of their ethnic background or the culture they come from," Fleming said.

I also thought Barack's response, as usual, was calibrated just right...

Lastly, a disturbing head scratching thought: it's very troubling that Skip's neighbor thought he was a thief and called the police on him. I guess folks just don't know their neighbors any longer...or at least the Black ones.
