Rwanda makes sense since a large portion of males were killed in the civil war and intuitively Sweden does too but I never would have guessed that Iraq (25%), the U.A.E. (22%) and South Africa (44%) all have a much higher percentage of women represented in their national legislatives bodies than the U.S. (17%).

That's partially attributable to the way they elect their representatives. These places tend to do slates, and women are much more likely to be elected on a slate ballot where they are part of a team of people elected. You have to compare one-to-one contests to get a true sense of political equality.
