DC's Finest

While cleaning out our basement, I came across some items that belonged to my father before he passed away. In the bottom of a plastic bag was a cloth sack containing three very old and rusty handguns and some ammo.

I had zero interest in keeping them so I did a little research and found out that it was possible to turn in firearms to the police, no questions asked, and they would even come to your house to pick them up. Out went the call and within 30 minutes two uniformed officers rang my bell. Part of the conversation went something like this:
DC's finest: "You found these in your basement? We'll file a report and log them in as found property"
Me: "Well yes, but I know they were my father's and he passed away almost 10 years ago. I just came across them while cleaning up"
DC's finest: "Oh, you don't want to clean them up and take them to a pawn shop?"
Me: "Uh, no. I'd rather there not be more guns on the streets."

DC's finest: "Well you could take them to MD or VA."

Me: [stunned silence] "Uh, I just want to turn them in."

Unbelievable.

Sad.

I have something that has been tucked away for years that I think belongs at the bottom of the ocean, too.
